Your development decision

Choose the sample size and identity around the decision you need to make, then compare candidates under consistent conditions.

Name the next decision

Decide whether this round is about colour and surface, hanging shape, sewing or a complete garment trial. A small cutting and a trial length answer different questions. Request a sample format with that purpose instead of asking for an undefined sample set.

Identify every candidate

Record supplier, sample reference, version, received date and what the sample represents. An external reference is not automatically a Fred product. Ask for a specification and identify the source of each confirmed value before adding it to a comparison.

Make the surface review comparable

Inspect equal-sized areas under the same light, at the same viewing angle and fabric direction. Look at face and reverse. Keep camera distance consistent and do not use a colour-adjusted photo as the physical colour approval.

Choose enough material for shape

A hanging panel should be large enough for the folds being discussed. Sewing trials need the intended layers and relevant details. Have the garment maker estimate the material needed and confirm sample length, fees and availability with Fred.

Capture feedback that can be acted on

Record the visible or tactile difference from the target: more fibre coverage, a firmer fold or greater pocket thickness. Keep reviewer, method and sample identity together. Do not invent a ranking score when the samples have not answered equivalent questions.

Close the sample round

State whether to keep the direction, alter a requirement, request trial material or discuss another candidate. List open specifications and tests. Carry those questions into the next brief so the review is a clear development step rather than a collection of loose photographs.

Before the next sample round

  • Use one dated revision
  • Identify the cloth and garment
  • Keep approval scope explicit
  • Carry unresolved questions to the next round
