WOOL FLANNEL · FRED TEXTILE

What Is Wool Flannel?

Separate the fabric name from fibre content, yarn route, construction and finish before asking for a sample.

Your development decision

Separate the fabric name from fibre content, yarn route, construction and finish before asking for a sample.

What the name tells you

Flannel is a cloth description used with different fibres and yarn routes. In this site the focus is wool and wool-blend apparel. Ask for the actual composition and reference rather than reading “flannel” as a declaration of pure wool.

Read five separate dimensions

Fibre composition, yarn route, woven construction, surface finish and garment use answer different questions. Keep them in separate fields. A raised face may show a finishing direction but cannot prove any specific fibre percentage or yarn system.

Woolen and worsted spellings

Woolen and woollen are spelling variants. In a yarn-route comparison, woolen-spun and worsted-spun refer to different processing routes. Neither term is a general quality grade; confirm the proposed reference and judge it against the garment.

Look at the actual cloth

Inspect face, reverse, directional appearance and hanging folds on physical material. A close photograph is useful for surface discussion but cannot establish touch, weight or suitability for your pattern. Ask for the format needed for the next trial.

Choose the garment review

Trousers bring seat, knees and pockets into focus. Jackets add supported fronts and lapels. Coats add longer folds, layered edges and underlayers. The same trade name does not eliminate these different construction tasks.

Write a precise first question

Ask: “Please identify the composition, yarn route, finish, weight with unit and usable width of a proposed flannel reference for [garment]. We need samples to review [specific points].” Add quantity and timing so feasibility can be discussed.

A practical development example

A buyer has only a photograph labelled flannel. The next useful step is to request an identified cutting and separate composition, yarn-system and finishing information. The photograph can describe the visible surface; touch, weight and garment response remain questions for physical review.
