Your development decision
Confirm usable width and the actual marker before estimating purchase quantity for a flannel garment.
Distinguish width fields
Total width includes the full measured cloth; usable width is the agreed cutting width after relevant edge restrictions. Ask how each is defined for the proposed reference. Do not assume all declared width is usable in the marker.
Let the pattern govern yield
Pattern, size mix, direction and any matching requirement influence the marker. The garment maker should use the actual pattern version and proposed width. A website cloth card cannot provide a reliable universal metres-per-garment value.
Record directional constraints
Review surface direction, stripe or check alignment and paired panels. One-way cutting may change the marker. Confirm its effect with actual layout rather than attaching a generic loss percentage to all flannel.
Record the trial consumption
Retain garment sample version, cut length, usable width, size and layout conditions. Separate sample consumption from a production marker. Include any maker-defined preparation and dimensional allowances clearly.
Separate net requirement and allowances
Keep calculated cloth need, agreed cutting or preparation allowances and final purchase quantity in distinct fields. Each allowance needs an actual basis. Do not hide uncertain yield behind a precise rounded order total.
Confirm the estimate before procurement
Ask the maker to confirm the marker and Fred to confirm width and quantity arrangements. Record units, colour allocation and revision. Recalculate if pattern, width, direction or size mix changes.
A practical development example
An overshirt marker was prepared for one cutting width, but a proposed reference has another. Ask the maker to recalculate using the actual pattern and direction before changing the purchase quantity. Keep the original marker and revised consumption visible so the team can see what caused the change.
