Stripes and Checks in Flannel Tailoring

Record pattern repeat, direction and garment alignment points on the actual flannel reference before cutting.

Your development decision

Record pattern repeat, direction and garment alignment points on the actual flannel reference before cutting.

Separate pattern from cloth structure

A stripe or check describes a visual pattern, while yarn route, composition and finish remain separate specifications. Confirm both the pattern and the underlying cloth for the candidate rather than treating one photograph as a complete description.

Name the important alignments

Identify front centre, pocket mouths, lapels and coordinated pieces where matching matters. The design team should prioritise the visible points. An instruction to match every point may conflict with the actual pattern and garment geometry.

Measure the repeat physically

Record repeat in both relevant directions with units and a ruler in the same plane as the cloth. Keep sample identity and direction visible. A photograph without scale cannot supply an accurate repeat measurement.

Check paired and supported parts

Trial left and right panels, seams and supported fronts with the intended construction. Observe pattern phase and surface direction together. Mark any deliberate unmatched area so it is not confused with a cutting error.

Use the actual marker

Repeat, usable width, size mix and matching decisions affect layout. Ask the maker to calculate consumption on the actual pattern. Avoid a fixed added percentage for all checks or stripes.

Carry instructions into approval

Retain the approved alignment points, pattern version and direction in the cutting documents. Request the physical sample and specification from Fred. Complex pattern development can be discussed separately while keeping the garment cutting task clear.

A practical development example

A checked blazer has a pocket alignment requirement. Mark the priority point on the pattern and measure the actual cloth repeat. Trial the pocket with its support and surface direction. Let the maker calculate consumption from this instruction instead of adding an unsupported universal matching allowance.
