Your development decision
Use fabric weight as one controlled specification, alongside thickness, construction, finish and the intended garment trial.
GSM is mass per unit area
GSM means grams per square metre of cloth. Record the declared value, reference and measurement basis. A weight field without its unit can be confused with grams per linear metre and should be clarified before comparison.
Equal weight does not mean equal cloth
Yarn, density, woven construction and finishing can produce different thickness and folds at similar GSM. Compare physical panels and retain the other confirmed specifications. Do not treat a weight ranking as a quality, warmth or drape ranking.
Relate weight to the garment
Trousers need a leg, pocket and wearing trial; jackets need support and lapel review; coats need layered edges and longer folds. Select a trial objective from these tasks rather than assigning a universal weight band to each garment.
Include the components
Lining, support, closures and the amount of cloth affect the finished garment. If total wearing weight matters, review the complete sample. A shell-fabric GSM value does not describe the weight or comfort of the whole garment.
Use a physical reference when uncertain
Send a cloth you already use or describe what should change about its body and surface. Ask Fred to identify the reference weight and propose alternatives. Leave the target open if the garment sample should decide it.
Agree the final measurement
Record the target unit, confirmed value, permitted tolerance and method when the project requires them. The parties should agree these details for the reference. Keep a numerical target separate from the sample’s approved garment response.
A practical development example
Two candidate cloths have similar declared GSM. This does not settle a trouser choice. Hang comparable panels, trial the pocket and waistband, then assess wearing and care using the intended lining. Record the confirmed numerical value beside those findings rather than asking the number to predict the result.

| Review point | What to record | Next decision |
|---|---|---|
| Declared grams per square metre | Record the actual value, conditions and source | Keep this point open until reviewed |
| Hanging panel and fold shape | Record the actual value, conditions and source | Keep this point open until reviewed |
| Joined-layer thickness | Record the actual value, conditions and source | Keep this point open until reviewed |
| Complete garment and lining weight | Record the actual value, conditions and source | Keep this point open until reviewed |
