Pressing and Tailoring Wool Flannel

Trial the proposed pressing process on actual cloth and support materials before applying it to the garment.

Your development decision

Trial the proposed pressing process on actual cloth and support materials before applying it to the garment.

Start from the reference and components

Confirm composition and finish and identify interlining, canvas and other layers. The garment maker should propose a trial process suited to this combination. A fabric name is not enough to specify a universal temperature or duration.

Use labelled trial pieces

Retain an untreated piece for comparison and label the tested orientation. Record the sample version and relevant pressing conditions, including equipment and cooling arrangement. Make enough observations to reproduce the trial if a change is needed.

Inspect the surface after treatment

Compare shine, flattening, colour appearance and touch with the starting reference. Review dimensions where relevant. Record actual results; do not treat an untested process recommendation as a successful trial.

Check garment details

Trial trouser lines, lapels, pocket edges, hems and thick seams relevant to the pattern. Supporting materials and joined layers may affect the result. Keep each construction and process together in the record.

Review bonded support

Where interlining is used, ask the technical team to review the bonded system and intended care. Record applicable separation or appearance observations and tests. Evidence for loose cloth does not establish the performance of every bonded assembly.

Agree the production process

The maker and supplier should review the specific requirements and observations. Retain the approved process with the garment version and revisit it when materials change. Ask Fred for reference-specific advice and available supporting information.

A practical development example

A lapel sample is being reviewed with a particular interlining. Retain an untreated cloth piece, record the maker’s process and compare the face after treatment. If the support material changes, review the new combination before reusing the earlier result as the production instruction.
