Your development decision
Evaluate flannel for coat volume, joined-layer bending, layering and lining in the intended outerwear construction.
Describe the coat and layering
State length, fit, shoulder, closure and intended layers beneath the coat. A loose, flowing coat and a structured overcoat ask different questions of the same cloth. Include movement and finished-garment weight among the review priorities.
Inspect volume beyond the weight number
Compare equal panels for thickness, folds and bending. Keep GSM as one specification alongside construction and finish. Do not infer insulation or wind protection from weight or the flannel name; request relevant evidence if those claims are required.
Trial collars, fronts and pocket layers
Sew a collar, front closure and pocket section with the proposed support materials. Review the thickness at overlapping layers and how edges turn. Press sample pieces under the maker’s proposed conditions and retain the actual observations.
Study hem and lining interaction
Hang a longer section with the intended hem and lining arrangement. Check whether layers move together and whether the bend at the hem supports the silhouette. A small flat cutting cannot answer these construction questions.
Wear with the intended underlayers
Use the planned shirt, knit or jacket layers and record arm movement, sitting and closure comfort. Review contact at the neck and cuffs. State environment and activity as trial conditions rather than translating them into an unsupported temperature rating.
Keep the flannel enquiry focused
Send Fred the coat construction, surface reference, lining plan and quantity. Request a candidate and trial length for these questions. If another cloth category better fits the project, discuss that alternative while retaining the same garment requirements.
Working review record
Scroll the table horizontally on small screens.
| Review point | What to record | Next decision |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Pattern version, shape and wearing use | Confirm the trial objective |
| Making | Support, lining, seam and pressing conditions | Review representative sections |
| Wearing | Contact areas, activity and rest period | Record actual observations |
| Care | Agreed process and before/after measurements | Approve only the reviewed scope |
