Your development decision
Compare surface, thickness and multi-layer construction for outerwear before selecting a flannel or melton reference.
Confirm the actual category description
Melton commonly describes a compact woolen cloth direction associated with outerwear; flannel is another surface and cloth direction. Ask for the supplier’s actual construction and finish. The name alone cannot tell you composition, insulation or availability.
Look beyond similar GSM
Equal mass per area can accompany different thickness, bending and feel. Compare equal-sized panels and record their confirmed specifications. Retain the source of each value rather than guessing weight from a photograph.
Try the layered details
Sew a collar, closure, pocket and hem with intended support. Compare turned edges and overlapping joins. Record which construction and pressing process were used so a difference in seam thickness is interpreted in context.
Review silhouette and wearing weight
Hang a panel large enough for coat folds and trial the intended underlayers. Observe reach, sitting and fastening. Include the weight of the complete garment and components if that is part of the design objective.
Ask separately about performance
Warmth and wind-related claims need their own applicable evidence when required. They cannot be inferred from the category or GSM. Define the garment use, method and acceptance requirement before requesting a report.
Carry the same brief to alternatives
Discuss which reference better answers your outerwear task and what remains untested. If the preferred direction changes to another cloth category, keep the pattern, layered details and care requirements rather than restarting with a vague name alone.
A practical development example
A coat team is considering two named cloth categories. A small cutting can introduce their faces, but cannot show the planned hem or overlapping closure. Request enough identified material for those sections and compare the same support and pressing process before choosing the next garment sample.
