Your development decision
Observe directional surface reflection on the actual sample, then agree the cutting instruction and marker.
Inspect the real surface
Turn the sample and stroke or view the face from consistent angles. Look for a directional lay or change in reflection. Record observations for the identified cloth rather than assuming every flannel needs the same cutting rule.
Mark face and direction
Label the face and agreed direction on the cutting and trial pieces. Photograph with the label visible where practical. Keep the instruction with the pattern and specification so different makers use the same reference.
Compare paired panels
Place paired sleeves, legs or front panels in the intended orientation. View them together under the same light. A directional colour appearance should be reviewed before it becomes an unintended mismatch in the garment.
Coordinate sets and replacements
A suit or replacement panel needs the relevant orientation recorded along with shade and lot. Communicate the direction in cutting documents. An earlier photograph without orientation is an incomplete instruction.
Confirm marker implications
Ask the garment maker to calculate any one-way layout effect using actual width and pattern. Do not invent a fixed extra percentage. If direction changes, update both consumption planning and the sample review.
Include trial pressing
Review sample surface after the proposed pressing process and confirm the cutting rule with the team. Record any revised instruction and reason. Carry it into the final specification and retained standard.
A practical development example
A pair of panels appears different when one is turned. Review the identified cloth under consistent light and agree whether direction causes the effect. Mark the cutting instruction, then ask the maker to check the marker. Do not assume the same directional rule for an unreviewed replacement fabric.

|---|---|---|
| Marked face and directional reflection | Record the actual value, conditions and source | Keep this point open until reviewed |
| Paired panels viewed together | Record the actual value, conditions and source | Keep this point open until reviewed |
| Set and replacement-panel instruction | Record the actual value, conditions and source | Keep this point open until reviewed |
| Actual one-way marker consumption | Record the actual value, conditions and source | Keep this point open until reviewed |
